Culinary
There are an incredible number of high-quality restaurants in the Maastricht region, we boast a number of restaurants who have been awarded the Bib Gourmand, and for those with a few more euro to spend we are not short on Michelin-starred restaurants either.
Culinary festivals
There are many culinary festivals throughout the year culminating in Preuvenemint in August which is the annual culinary highlight of the Maastricht Region. Not forgetting more down to earth tastes, we’re also famous for our “zuurvlees/ zoervleis” – a rich meaty sauce which is piled onto servings of frites (hot chips) and topped with a dollop of mayonnaise – available from the corner frituur (chip shop) in every neighbourhood.
Local shops with food from all around the globe
Although we are very proud of our region – the Maastricht Region – we also know that the Netherlands may not score terribly high on a global scale in culinary terms. Our traditional cuisine has a certain focus and has traditionally been limited to the types of produce that can be cultivated in these lowest of lands. It is then no coincidence that we have growing numbers of restaurants as well as shops providing a vast array of dishes, ingredients and produce from all over the world. We thought we’d put together a list of sources of ingredients and produce from all around the globe that can be found right here in the Maastricht Region.
