Interview with expert partner: UWC Maastricht
Each month we give one of our expert partners the floor to introduce themselves and their services so you can ensure you and your employees are getting the most out of life in the Maastricht Region. This time we interviewed Viki Stiebert, Head of College of UWC Maastricht.
I’m especially looking forward to experiencing my first ‘Vastelaovend’ in Maastricht, which makes me realise it is probably time to start planning my outfit!
''My name is Viki Stiebert and I hold dual German/New Zealand citizenship. I have experience in international education, having previously served as the Director of an international school in Bergen, Norway, and I also worked in schools in New Zealand, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, the UK and Panama. I strongly believe in the power of education to foster peace and create a sustainable future and I am inspired to have joined United World College (UWC) Maastricht as Head of College at the start of this academic year.
UWC Maastricht is an international primary and secondary school offering English-language education for students aged 4 to 18. We deliver the International Baccalaureate curriculum, enhanced by the unique elements of the UWC mission . This helps our students flourish, become the best versions of themselves and positively impact their communities. For students aged 16 and above, we also offer the opportunity to live on campus, providing an immersive and enriching educational experience. Additionally, we provide scholarships to many students, enabling greater diversity within our community and expanding the impact of our mission. Our graduates are prepared for top universities worldwide and equipped to make meaningful contributions to society.''
How has your organisation been involved in Expat Centre Maastricht Region events or projects?
''As an international school, we share Expat Centre Maastricht Region’s goal of supporting the expat and international community in the Maastricht Region. Through the expat centre, we have shared information about our educational programmes and connected with families new to the Maastricht Region. This collaboration ensures a smooth transition to our school and provides additional guidance to help these families settle and connect with the region and ultimately thrive living in the Netherlands. At school, we also have an active Parent Association who assists new families in navigating both our school community and the city of Maastricht, complementing the efforts of the expat centre. And lastly, we are in contact with Expat Centre Maastricht Region to arrange Fast-Track appointments for our new incoming staff and residential students who do not hold European Union citizenship to collect their visas at the IND desk at Mosae Forum. This is highly appreciated by us as a school!''
How can your organisation add value to the lives of expats / internationals in the Maastricht Region?
''UWC Maastricht offers a globally recognised English-language education, combining academic excellence with holistic development. With students and staff from over 100 nationalities, we foster a diverse and inclusive community, helping international families feel at home as they transition to a new country.
Each year, our students dedicate 40,000 hours to local community projects in the Maastricht Region, from volunteering in elderly homes and supporting children with disabilities to environmental initiatives and food bank donations. These efforts strengthen the region’s vibrancy while reinforcing our commitment to social responsibility. We also host events that connect local and international communities, encouraging cultural exchange and collaboration. Many of our students thrive at UWC Maastricht thanks to the generosity of companies and like-minded supporters who share our mission and contribute to scholarship funding. By organising events and welcoming external people into our school, we aim to express our gratitude, inspire connections and expand our network. Join us in shaping a peaceful, sustainable and just world and come to one of our activities.''
What is the best thing about living in the Maastricht Region?
''Having only moved here a few months ago, I am still discovering the many wonderful things the Maastricht Region has to offer. I love the Maastricht’s vibrant and international character, paired with its welcoming, home-like atmosphere. Cycling to work or through the city centre immediately made me feel like a local! The Maastricht Region is incredibly rich in culture, nature, history, business and leisure opportunities. Being so close to 2 international borders further adds to its charm. I’m especially looking forward to experiencing my first ‘Vastelaovend’ in Maastricht, which makes me realise it is probably time to start planning my outfit! Lastly, Maastricht’s warm community perfectly aligns with what both the Expat Centre Maastricht Region and UWC Maastricht strive to foster: social interaction and cultural exchange. In other words, I am simply happy to be a part of this vibrant community!''
