Heerlen among national frontrunners of culture

Heerlen has opted for culture with social significance through their redevelopment of monuments, offering music and dance in schools and providing large and small scale events for all. In the Culture Benchmark (based on research from Statistics Netherlands), Heerlen rose from 3rd to 2nd place nationally, passing major cities Amsterdam and Rotterdam.

We believe in culture as a connector of people. It is a source of pride and an important way to let everyone, young and old, participate. We introduce thousands of children to heritage and culture. We have one of the largest theatres in the Netherlands in our city and we have culture inextricably linked to urban development. That has become the Heerlen way of doing things and this ranking underlines its success.

Together with its partners, such as Provincie Limburg, Heerlen is investing in local cultural strongholds such as het Romeins Museum , a city bath in a national monumental church and the city’s film and cinema hub, Royal Theatre . In recent years, the city gained fame as the street art capital of the Netherlands and, together with residents, went in search of their past in Heel Heerlen Graaft  (The City of Heerlen Digs), a community archaeological project. Examples of cultural quality are also the Warhol exhibition in Schunck and Cultura Nova, the largest performing arts festival in the Netherlands.
