Limburg 2026 Shopping Patterns Survey gets underway

The Limburg 2026 Retail Footfall Survey begins today. Through this survey, Limburg’s local authorities, the Province of Limburg and business organisations are mapping out where residents do their grocery shopping, go shopping and visit restaurants and cafés. The survey will also examine how residents rate different shopping areas. The results will help local authorities to make targeted investments in attractive and future-proof town centres and facilities. The findings of the study are expected in the spring of 2027.

These insights are particularly valuable for Maastricht. In the 2026–2030 coalition agreement, the city council sets out its ambition to strengthen the local economy and invest in vibrant shopping areas that contribute to the city’s overall prosperity. Maastricht is keen to ensure that its shopping areas and facilities remain future-proof.

Councillor Hubert Mackus (Economy)

“An attractive city centre and strong district and neighbourhood centres are important for our residents, visitors and business owners. The shopping flow study gives us a better understanding of how people shop and spend time in Maastricht. This knowledge helps us to continue working with business owners to create a vibrant and economically strong city.”

Take part

In September and October 2026, residents of Maastricht will receive an invitation to take part in the survey. The selected households have been chosen at random from all occupied addresses within the municipality. Taking part involves completing an online questionnaire and takes approximately 15 minutes. The questionnaire is available in several languages.

Residents who do not receive an invitation can also take part. The questionnaire can be completed from 15 September to 8 November 2026. A prize draw will be held amongst all participants, with 100 gift vouchers worth €25 each to be won.
