The municipality of Landgraaf was formed in 1982 from the municipalities of Ubach over Worms, Nieuwenhagen and Schaesberg. After the mining industry disappeared, the former mining sites were transformed into business parks and recreation areas where the Mondo Verde family park and the Pinkpop festival site now stand. Wilhelmina- berg is a special landmark, with SnowWorld, the largest indoor indoor ski slope in Europe, being located on top of this gigantic former spoilheap.
