For many internationals, speaking Dutch can be one of the biggest challenges to feeling at home in the Netherlands. On Thursday, 26 November 2026, we challenge ourselves to step out of our comfort zone, practise Dutch, and discover local opportunities to continue learning the language.
Can you speak Dutch for one day?
What began as a local initiative in Leiden in 2025 is now expanding nationwide! Launched by Leiden International Centre in collaboration with Gemeente Leiden, Praat Nederlands Day aims to make Dutch language practice more accessible and approachable, while highlighting the many organisations and resources that support language learning across the Netherlands.

A fun programma for internationals to practice Dutch.
Taalcafé Centre Ceramique | 12.30 - 13.30
At this language café at Bibliotheek Maastricht, you can practise your Dutch in a fun way whilst enjoying a cup of coffee or tea.
Guided tour at Fotomuseum aan het Vrijthof in Maastricht | 15:00 - 16:00
Fotomuseum aan het Vrijthof in Maastricht presents a tribute to the life and work of the legendary American photojournalist Eve Arnold (1912-2012). The large retrospective exhibition All about Eve features a selection of 130 iconic black-and-white and colour photographs from her impressive oeuvre, with a focus on the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s.
The guided tour will be in easy Dutch. After the tour, there will be an opportunity to enjoy a snack and a drink.
Film 'Joe Speedboot' at Lumière Maastricht | 18:30 - 20:25
The film follows the teenager Fransje Hermans, who, following a bizarre accident, can no longer speak intelligibly, suffers from spasticity and can only move his right arm, and who therefore seems doomed to spend his days in the sleepy, fictional village of Lomark. His life seems hopeless, until the charismatic and reckless newcomer Joe Speedboot arrives and befriends Fransje.
After the film, there will be an opportunity to enjoy a drink.
